In a shocking move, Disney has pulled out of U.S. distribution for the popular Studio Ghibli animated films, 20 years after the initial landmark deal. New York-based distributor GKIDS now has sole rights to Ghibli’s catalog in America, with the exceptions of 2013’s The Wind Rises and Grave of the Fireflies. Disney will continue distribution in European territories, however.
GKIDS has earlier in the year made lesser-known Studio Ghibli titles Oceans Waves and Only Yesterday available on DVD and Blu-Ray. They will also distribute My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind on DVD and Blu-Ray in October, with My Neighbor the Yamadas available in early 2018.
