Pull Box: January 9

The War of the Realms is finally on its way, and we’re getting a peek behind the curtain of the unsung heroes of War that gather information, and spy on enemies such as Malekith. The growth of Roz Solomon as a hero, and agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. (now Agent of Wakanda) has been one of the bigger character pieces throughout the last several years of Thor, and arguably one of its biggest successes. The tragedy that follows her drives her now, and has really helped her flourish into a greater role behind the scenes.

Are we finally gaining traction on the return of the previous universes across the DC Multiverse?! They just said that “this universe is not the first!” That could mean so many things, but the constant restoration of the DC status quo cannot be ignored in this case. Mystery on top of mystery abound here as the entire universe is united against the Justice League for the destruction of the Source Wall. Thanks, Batman.

That was a wildly interesting issue. Though, when Tom King and Mitch Gerads are together, nothing but the weirdest stories are in order, and it’s great. With only one page of spoken dialogue, we’re in Batman’s head as he awakens in what is most certainly some sort of nightmare. The good thing? We’re finally back on track somewhat with Flashpoint Batman as Bruce finally remembers what’s happening. But what made him forget? This is an intense story with so many crazy mysteries in play.

I figured that the Green Lantern vs. God thing would be a ploy, but if anyone would be willing to go there, it would be Grant Morrison. Unfortunately, it was a ploy for a planet eater to trick the Earth into complacency while he fattened up the planet and its population to eventually consume it. Clever. This version of Hal Jordan is much more of a “Space Cop” than any other instances, being more grizzled and utilizing more aggressive tactics. Even going so far as to kill the slave trader, though he certainly deserved it.

This moved so quickly, and in such insane fashion that it was hard to really pull it all together. But being so quick moving, and being a thing that involved Impulse in any capacity, made it a hell of a lot of fun. The quick introduction to Young Justice, and the re-emergence of several younger characters for no apparent reason was a bit strange, but in the world of comics, anything is truly possible. Hopefully Bendis is able to slow that pace down just a bit, though.

The Teen Titans are Returning

In what is sure to be great news for many fans, the original Teen Titans are returning, but not exactly in the form you’d expect. While it’s still unclear of the capacity of the announcement, be it a new series, movie, or mini-series, Teen Titans vs. Teen Titans GO! is a real thing, as confirmed by Warner Bros. Animation.

The above trailer is said to be from next week’s Blu-ray and DVD release of Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, leaking online ahead of its release. What do you think of this idea? A good way to ease a new audience into the old team maybe?

After the many stories that have pushed Bruce forward into happiness and his future, it’s nice to see him reflecting on his past. After all that’s happened, it makes sense that Dick, his closest friend, would be the one to loosen him up slightly and lower his defenses. Be the one he shows the slightest bit of weakness to. And that was a beautifully charming way to see the Dark Knight let down his guard.
JL
Holy crap, that issue was full of so much awesome! The return of Starman! I’m freaking out! The Batman Who Laughs is still alive! What?! We finally were given answers to the mystery of the totality, but there are still so many questions moving forward, and Starman promises to give them. A strange coincidence, but a foreshadowing that doesn’t bode well for the team.

That was quite the incredible plan. Not only did it make sense, but it was ridiculous and created a moment I feel like I’ve never seen before. A Galactus-sized Emma Frost, releasing all the Power Cosmic and bringing life to a dead universe. That’s insane. The revelation that their artificial Sun was Johnny Storm, with his abilties enlarged by the Power Cosmic was almost tragic in a way, but it was totally made up for by his survival, and his passing of the Power back to Norrin Radd, aka Silver Surfer, so that he could catch up to the love of his life, Emma Frost. That was just great story-telling full of unexpected twists.
MOS
I am honestly not sure what to make of this. Brian Michael Bendis has first crack at a DC title and he leaves it on a cliffhanger, doing nothing than introducing a couple of new characters to the Superman mythos. That seems a bit counter-intuitive for a writer with so much pomp and circumstance arriving on the scene of a new company. I suppose I’ll just have to wait until the next issue to find out a little more of what’s going on. With that said, it’s nice to see Superman on a bit of a change of pace since Rebirth started.
NJ
That was so awesome. Admittedly, I didn’t feel the sense of crazy unexpectedness that I was supposed to with their plan of charging the seed, and forcing the other Titans to eat their brethren, but the pay-off was still worth it. And by pay-off I mean the New Justice League, as well as the prospect of Justice League Dark featuring Wonder Woman and Swamp Thing, and Justice Leagye Odyssey with Cyborg finally taking his rightful place as leader of a team. The changes happening in the main DC books have been great, and Snyder is single-handedly making comics fun again.
DC
While not giving us much in the way of answers, or plot points, this issue of Doomsday Clock did wonders to set the political tone for this version of the DC Universe. The Superman theory has created an artificial arms race across the planet and set the wheels of war in motion, and truthfully, the metahumans of the world, at least the truly powerful ones, like the Justice League, seem almost less than concerned. It’s strange, but once again, the pace of this book is crawling like a snail with almost no answers in sight. Things have to pull themselves together quick if we’re all going to make sense of this.
ROB
The little moments between Damian and Selina were great in this book. They worked well to bring together two characters that should honestly seem a little closer as their methodologies are more in line with one another, but they just hadn’t been given the chance. Now, things have pushed the two together, and I think it will work well for both of their characters. The star of this, though – was an unseen Joker, who single-handedly wiped out an entire sect of the League of Assassins searching for an invite to the wedding of the decade. The build-up for his invasion of Bruce and Selina’s marriage has been slow and incredible.

DC
That was a fantastic ending to a fantastic story, with the OMAC Arc coming to a massive conclusion, and setting up the future for so many characters. Batwoman no longer has the shadow of the Colony over her, but her Dad still remains. Red Robin and Spoiler are going on what sounds like a timeline hopping road trip adventure, and two of the greatest Batgirls are training together. Lastly, Clayface is alive! Holy crap, that’s amazing! Heartbreaking, but amazing. I can’t wait for the inevitable moment Cass and him see each other again. What a way to end a story… setting up so many more.
GL
Hector Hammond is such a strange character. I see this going badly for the Green Lantern Corps with such a powerful telepath on the battlefield. But, that’s not even the craziest twist in this issue! Guy Gardner choosing to join the Darkstars. There’s something fishy going on there. It just seemed like such a throwaway moment for something that should have been huge. John Stewart proved himself ever the tactician, as well. Even showing a bit of arrogance in the face of Zod. That was pretty awesome for a character who hasn’t been given much time to shine since Rebirth began.
NJ
Scott Snyder has a knack for making you think that things are going well. That the heroes are coming back and could actually pull this off. But, out of nowhere, it’s all undone, and that hope is swatted down like a fly. I thought that the multiple leagues would save Colu, and Earth would be spared, but unfortunately that’s not how things went. Now, with one issue left, the Omega Titans are surrounding Earth, waiting for the Trees to fully bloom, and the planet to be absorbed by the victor.
FL
Damn, what a start to the Flash War! Having the old, brave Iris who will do anything to protect her family back has already instilled a new energy into this book. The initial basis for this was really seeming like Wally acting more like a child than the seasoned veteran that he truly is, but they brought it back at the end with the prospect of saving Wally’s children, who were pretty great parts of the older DC Universe. I can just imagine a crossover with the Super Sons.
SIL
Just like that, The Silencer’s cover is blown to her son, and he’s absolutely going to think she is the coolest damn person in the world. As per usual, Deathstroke is playing all the angles in an attempt to end the war within Leviathan, but it would seem he may have placed his trust on the wrong side. We’ll have to see where it all ends up, but it’s sure to be brutal, with a lot of bullets.
TERR
That was a sad ending to a really fun story. The team has a name, and little by little they’re starting to work together more cohesively, and befriending each other in some pretty great ways. This team has real chemistry with each other from a character standpoint, so it’s pretty easy to see why they’re such great reads. I’ll say, though, after 4 issues of exposition, it’ll be nice to get into a good size arc with these fantastic characters. Especially Plastic Man.
WW
That took a turn I wasn’t expecting. So, the armor was meant for Diana all along, that makes sense. Now, in a twist of fate, Wonder Woman is swept away by the Star Sapphires at the most inopportune moment, while Jason, who is clearly being groomed for greater things, is left to defeat the Dark Gods, on his own. It would seem the Fates knew much more than they let on with Jason.

Batwoman Headed to The Arrowverse on CW

BW

Arrow star, Stephen Amell, confirmed in a press conference today that The CW is taking the next step forward with its “Arrowverse” and introducing Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, to the universe, as well as her home city, Gotham City. Kate Kane was re-introduced to the DC Universe in the New 52, and has gone on to become one of the leading LGBTQ characters in all of comics.

We’re incredibly excited to announce that we’ll be doing another crossover event this fall on the CW, and we’ll be introducing a new character. For the very first time appearing, we’ll be fighting alongside Batwoman, which is terrific. The crossover is going to make it to air in December. I need to leave right now and start filming it.

WK
I’m honestly sad to see this story end. White Knight has been one of the best original stories I’ve read out of any comic book publisher in years. Such original ideas, with such iconic characters. It’s been one hell of a rollercoaster ride, and there’s no other way I could have seen it end. The reveal that Joker was never the real White Knight of the story was expected given the focus that Harley Quinn as a character has had this entire time, and how instrumental she was at moving the story forward. Absolutely amazing story, that will always be one of my most recommended books.
DC
It’s nice to see that both of those amazing Batgirl’s haven’t been completely forgotten. With any luck, the reveal by Brother Eye of their alternate selves could spur Bruce on to fully bringing them into the family and making them their own versions of Batgirl, though they’ve both proven they don’t need it. It would still be nice to see those awesome costumes back in action, particularly Cassandra’s spooky black Catwoman-esque costume.
GL
The Green Lanterns partnering with everyone they’ve been involved with since Rebirth began is a great way to call-back to all of the crazy things that have happened. Additionally, John Stewart had one hell of a moment to be so badass against Zod that he cemented himself as truly the best Green Lantern. At least in the case of planning. Lastly, Hector Hammond, who I assume is now being referred to as the God Brain, being used as a weapon against the Darkstars is somehow tragic, and redeeming, though he’s almost guaranteed to return to his villainous ways.
NJ
The entire premise of this crossover is so ridiculously absurd that only Scott Snyder could possibly dream it up. Seeing all of these heroes and villains team up to fight an insane cosmic threat is absolutely the coolest way to start his run on Justice League, and out of all of this, I hope that we get a solo Starro book after all is said and done. Starro is easily the most ridiculous choice, and almost immediately made an impact on being both an incredible threat, and comic relief. That’s range.
SW
Sideways has been such an interesting book, with gorgeous artwork, and incredibly detailed characters. Sadly, it’s also one of the only New Age of Heroes books that hasn’t totally immersed itself in the wider DC Universe. Hopefully the next issue, with Derek beginning his dimensional training will kick-start the story in a few new ways, as the story has been starting to drag a bit, and could use something to get moving.
FL
This was both a great re-introduction to Hunter Zolomon, and a fantastic prelude to the Flash War, which I’m absolutely looking forward to, as Flash rarely gets his own events on this level. The mystery behind Wally’s memories, and how they’re going to factor into the changing landscape of the DC Universe remains to be seen, but month by month, DC continues to shift the focus back to the original universe and characters, and it’s been fascinating to read.
WW
I’ve been waiting for this arc to start, and Wonder Woman isn’t messing around. The Dark Gods are finally coming, which will hopefully give us some answers surrounding Jason and his mysterious armor. But, to immediately jump into Supergirl being affected by these coming Gods is a crazy choice. On top of that, we get an inevitably brutal fight between two of the most powerful women in the DC Universe. That sounds like a win-win.

DC
This OMAC story has been firing on all cylinders since all of the pieces fell into place, and with the General basically forcing Tim to become his future self, there are a lot of questions to be answered. The biggest being how does Batman fix the mental and emotional damage that Ulysses just instilled into Tim? Will it just be a part of the OMAC Program that will disappear once it’s out of his system? There are a lot of questions to be answered here, and I can’t wait for the next issue.
GL
Oh man, the Darkstars are in full control, using the Controllers as an energy source and psychic link for each other, but now they’re just normal people, augmented by the power of the Darkstars. That’s a great twist on what they’ve been in the past, and a great way to modernize them. The biggest question to come out of this, though, is who the Green Lantern Corps plans to pick up to help them in their fight. I’m seeing a whole bunch of Yellow Lanterns and villains showing up at this point.
FL
This was an emotional epilogue/prologue for Flash War that really tied up a lot of loose character threads, but opened the door to so many new mysteries. Iris remembers Wally! But she seems to remember even more than we think, as she somehow triggers all of Wally’s Pre-52 memories. That’s a crazy thought to imagine, but here we are, as continuities begin to merge and shift, and little by little the DC Universe restores itself naturally to its original world. First Superman, now Flash… who’s next?
SIL
It’s just so random to me that The Silencer is far and away the best book of the New Age of Heroes. This book has seamlessly created an entirely new world within the DC Universe, and effortlessly merged a select group of heroes into it, in such a precise and fantastic way. The characters are charming, and have flaws but still work so well. On top of that, the art in this is always top-notch. First Romita, now Capullo. These are some serious heavy-hitters working on this book, and it’s awesome.
TER
I’ll enjoy literally anything that I read with Plastic Man in it, because his humor and quick wit is such a delight that it just makes everything so fun. This was still enjoyable, but Mr. Terrific is certainly out of his element working with a team after going solo on Earth-2 for so many years. Hopefully he comes around soon, and starts caring about these people that’s bound to by the Dark Multiverse.
WW
Darkseid is defeated by his own greed, and lust for power. He stole the energy from Gods well beyond himself and paid the price when it was used against him. A good play, I must admit. Bit by bit, Jason is endearing himself, and he just keeps getting more and more powerful. First he received some crazy armor that helped strengthen and control his abilities, and now he received Hippolyta’s spear. Something is going on there. There’s a bigger plan for Jason, I can feel it.
THOR
That was one hell of a way to send off one of the best characters Marvel has introduced. Mighty Thor was emotional, and flawed, but layered in a way so few characters are ever allowed to be. She was a perfect embodiment of the divine and the human, and no other character will ever capture it this way. The Odinson has some heavy shoes to fill, but it should be a great read… where we go from here.

THANOS
This was a beautiful end to a beautiful story arc. This is honestly one of the best ways to a story like this ending that I have ever seen. The thought that Thanos is so strong-willed and powerful that just the thought of never becoming his future self erases his self from existence. It was instantaneous… no drama, no waiting with baited breath. It was quick, and a solid ending for an fantastic story.
DC
THAT. WAS. AWESOME. Call me gullible, but never in a million years would I have expected Ulysses Armstrong to take control of a newly created Brother Eye, and recreate OMAC. That was such an incredible reveal for the Rebirth introduction of OMAC. That absolutely blew my mind. I knew this story was going in some pretty great places, but the Colony is being destroyed from the inside before it even had a chance to get going, and that’s pretty great.
GL
The return of the Darkstars! It’s been quite a while since the Darkstars were able to make an impact on the Green Lantern Corps, but their build-up, between this book and even the ending pages of Metal, has made them already a formible and intimidating enemy. The story of Tomar-Tu almost seems to have been tailor-made for this, as well… like this is what they’ve been working towards with him from the beginning of Rebirth.
SW
Thus far, Sideways is the weakest of the New Age of Heroes books, with his story taking longer than the others to really kick into gear. On top of that, he also feels the most distant from the rest of the DC Universe, with all of his supporting cast being new to the world. Hopefully things change in the next issue or so, and it starts to ramp up a bit more.
FLASH
A lot of good loose ends tied up here at the end of this arc, and the splash page with the entire Flash family running together legitimately gave me goosebumps. It’s build-up and satisfying moments like that, that make comic books worth it with these larger than life characters. Now, we’re inching closer to Flash War, and I can’t wait.
WW
It’s been such a mystery to what end Darkseid has been trying to hard to reach Themyscira, but it was a bit of a let-down that his entire goal was to turn the Amazons into Parademons. It’s entirely possible there’s more to his plan here, but so far this isn’t quite what I expected. At least the fight between Diana and Darkseid was brutal as hell. That was perfect.
