Deadline is reporting that the director of District 9 and Chappie, Neil Blomkamp, has signed on to helm RoboCop Returns for MGM. The project is being developed from a script by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner that will act as a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s original classic.
So, it looks like Blomkamp won’t get to work on his Aliens sequel after all, but he’ll start get to make his mark on a classic sci-fi franchise.
The first short from Neil Blomkamp’s Oats Studios was released this morning. Titled Rakka, and broken into three chapters, the story follows a band of the last remnants of humanity after a hostile alien takeover. The aliens are vicious, and overpowering, with the ability to take control of a person’s psych with a single look.
It’s a fantastic short film, and being the first in a volume of many, there are obviously questions that still need quite a few answers. Check it out above, and let me know what your thoughts are!

Neil Blomkamp has released a mysterious trailer for his new project: Oats Studios. The film is the first in a series of short film compilations that spotlight various stories after an alien invasion. Genre regulars Dakota Fanning, and Sigourney Weaver are both shown, along with Blomkamp’s trademark incredible creature and prop design.
There’s currently no release date for any of the films, but they will potentially be releasing on YouTube, with many of the visual effects assets and more features to be released alongside the films on Steam.
