Disney is finally making some moves on its upcoming live-action adaptation of Mulan, with Donnie Yen set to play Commander Tung, a mentor and teacher to Mulan. It’s unclear if Disney is replacing Li Shang, the Chinese army captain who trained Mulan along with a group of rag tag recruits in the animated film. Additionally, Jet Li is in final talks to play the Emperor of China, and Chinese actress Gong Li has been confirmed to play the villain in the film.
The film will deviate from the animated source material, with reports stating that Gong Li will play the role of a powerful witch that is threatening China. The new additions to the cast join Chinese actress Liu Yifei, set to play the title role of Mulan.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Disney has found their live-action Mulan, and cast Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu. This is wonderful news, as it ensures that Disney is making the film as faithful to its source material as possible, so my hopes are already much higher for this adaptation.
Niko Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife) is directing the film with a script from Jurassic World and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
