New Godzilla: Monster Planet Trailer

Toho Animation and Polygon Pictures have released a new trailer for the upcoming Netflix-animated film, Godzilla: Monster Planet, and with the new trailer, we have our first good look at the all-new Godzilla design created specifically for the animated film. The film follows hero, Haruo, who is selected to return to Earth with one purpose in mind after witnessing his parents death before his eyes: defeat Godzilla.

Godzilla: Monster Planet debuts in Japan this November followed by a release on Netflix. Godzilla: Monster Planet is from Polygon Pictures and directed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Shshita, with a script from Gen Urobuchi.

Director Teasing 1954 Connection for Godzilla 2

godzilla

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is in full swing, with production being 41 days in, and the teases continue to follow. This morning, director Mike Dougherty teased a fascinating connection to the 1954 original film, showing a picture of the original Oxygen Destroyer, created by that film’s Dr. Serizawa. The device would remove the oxygen from any body of water it was placed in, effectively defeating Godzilla.

Ken Watanabe played a Dr. Serizawa in the 2014 film, and is reprising his role for the sequel, but it’s unclear how his character may fit with this device, given they are meant to be two separate characters. Hit the jump to take a look at the initial tweet from Mike Dougherty.

R.I.P. Haruo Nakajima

haruo

Haruo Nakajima, the suit actor who played Godzilla from 1954’s Godzilla to 1972’s Godzilla vs. Gigan, has passed away, after contracting pneumonia. He was 88 years old. The man most famous for originally donning the suit that created one of the most famous film characters in history, initially did not receive his due respect, but after several years, he has since become a legend among fans of the franchise.

He will be greatly missed, and my thoughts and love go to his family and loved ones.

Well, the apocalypse was cancelled, and the second apocalypse has been delayed, as Pacific Rim: Uprising has been pushed back from February 23, 2018 to March 23, 2018. The news, first reported by Variety, was later confirmed by director, Steven DeKnight.

This is the third time the film has been delayed since it was originally announced in June 2012, shifting from several titles to its current form. The first trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising is expected to debut soon.

First Look at Pacific Rim: Uprising

SDCCtag

The first trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising gives us no story, but instead focuses on what we came for: beautiful, gigantic Jaegers. The Jaegers, giant robots from the first film that were used to fight kaiju, are getting an upgrade in this film, with the focus on newer models, instead of the previously older, Gipsy Danger. The new primary Jaeger is Gipsy Avenger, piloted by John Boyega’s character. There’s also Guardian Bravo, Titan Redeemer, Bracer Phoenix, and Saber Athena.

We also have a new viral website for the film, revealing blueprints of the new Jaeger styles, and confirming that Pacific Rim: Uprising is set 10 years after the original. Pacific Rim: Uprising is currently expected to hit theaters February 23, 2018.

Robotech Finds Director

rob

The long gestating Robotech film has finally found a director in IT helmer Andy Muschietti, the Hollywood Reporter has learned. Last we heard, James Wan was tapped to direct, and now, after Wan left for DC Entertainment’s Aquaman, it seems they poached him from Justice League Dark, as Muschietti was the front-runner for that film.

The story takes place after the Earth has used a downed alien spaceship to advance technology and create giant weaponized robots, which are then used to quell an alien invasion against the Earth.

Godzilla: Monster Planet Trailer

What a day for Kaiju fans! Toho Animation has released the first trailer for Godzilla: Kaiju Wakusei (or Godzilla: Monster Planet). The film is slated for release in Japan in November, will release internationally on Netflix afterwards. Kobun Shizuno, who’s manned a few Detective Conan films, and Hiroyuki Seshita, who directed the Ajin anime, are co-directing. Gen Urobuchi of Madoka Magica fame is penning the script.

Twenty-thousand years in the future, Godzilla, and various other kaiju have completely over-taken the Earth, forcing humanity to abandon it ages ago. Now, humanity has returned, set to take back the planet from the massive creatures.

City Shrouded in Shadow Trailer Looks Amazing

The upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive, Kyoei Toshi (or City Shrouded in Shadow) has its first full trailer, and as expected it looks ridiculous. The game sees you take control of the protagonist, a normal guy trying to survive various monster attacks in Tokyo. This includes Godzilla, Evangelion Units, Gamera, Ultraman, and many more.

City Shrouded in Shadow launches in Japan on October 19th. There is no word on localization, but a man can dream.

New Comic Books: May 31

NEWCOMICS

Another slower week for comic releases as we start to approach San Diego Comic-Con, and many of the large event releases throughout August. It was a great week for reading, at least, as what books there were, were fantastic. Great twists, charming origin stories, and some absolutely mind-boggling art this week.

comics2

Naturally, my recommendation for this week, is Wonder Woman Annual #1 – which consists of a series of short stories about Diana of Themyscira. The first is, by far, the most charming. We’re back to the moment Diana revealed herself to the world, and Supermand and Batman quickly take notice. Both attempt to spy on her at the military base, and much to their dismay, she instead finds them, in a fantastic scene. The art and characterization in this story alone is what made this my recommendation for the week.

The other few stories are hit and miss, with the kaiju story being particularly a hit, with beautiful artwork, and a small, personal story about Diana rescuing the child of a giant monster.

FLASH

Now that The Button has concluded, we’re suddenly back to a more personal Flash story, as a surprise visit from Multiplex, after a surprise visit from Hal Jordan, after a surprise party all happens with 4 pages. The entire fight, Barry is struggling in his head about whether to tell Iris the truth about who he is. It’s a rare moment, to stay so strictly in a heroes head, and it makes the story feel incredibly personal to Barry Allen and his struggle.

The real takeaway here, though, is the final page. After getting Iris back home safe, Wally opens the door, and lo and behold… the Reverse Flash. Eobard Thawne. Already back from the dead. That somewhat takes away from the power of the Button event doesn’t it?

comics1

The only Marvel read this week is the 3rd installment of the primary Secret Empire event, which is pulling no punches, at this point. Steve Rogers is going back and forth between save Supreme Leader, and caring politician like a light switch, while the heroes bicker and split in an attempt to save the day. We saw much more of the mysterious other Steve Rogers, who I’m going to call it now, is navigating his own head. The blue glow of the world they’re in closely resembles that of the Cosmic Cube, and I could see that twist happening.

My favorite moment in this book came at the end, though. Fred Myers, aka Boomerang, had started his own restaurant, and facilitated a meeting between Black Widow and Maria Hill. Late that night, he steps into the bathroom to reveal a landmine. Finally, in a shocking, but totally-makes-sense twist, the Punisher reveals himself to have aligned with Hydra. Proudly hailing, with a Hydra/Punisher skull variant adorned across his chest.
