It’s official! After years of clamoring for it, we finally have our first female doctor. Jodie Whittaker, best known for her turn on Broadchurch, as well as her role as Sam in Attack The Block for you sci-fi fans has been cast as the lead role, which has been surrounded by secrecy for rumors for months.
I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait. – Jodie Whittaker
This will surely split the Doctor Who fandom pretty down the middle, as newer fans will welcome her, and old purists will inevitably be upset at the turn. Well… too bad! This is great!
The BBC has announced that this Sunday, July 16th, after the Wimbledon Finals, they will be revealing the identity of the 13th Doctor. This has been a long time coming, and the longest casting reveal in the history of Doctor Who (outside of the reboot). It’s anyone’s guess as to the identity, as it’s been kept immensely hush-hush.
Peter Capaldi was thrown around as a favorite very early-on, so it wasn’t much of a surprise. However, with names like Tilda Swinton, and Kris Marshall taking the reins here, this should be a great reveal.
