While at their SDCC Panel, Netflix also premiered the first clip from the Adam Wingard-directed horror-thriller adaptation of Death Note. The clips sees Light Turner meet Ryuk for the first time in a tense battle of wills, as Light succumbs to the throes of the Death Note for the first time, and is coerced to write in its pages.
Death Note does not look like a great movie, in all honesty. It could be good as a standalone film, but thus far, as a Death Note property, it’s not inspiring much confidence. We’ll find out August 25th, when Death Note drops on Netflix.
Netflix has released its second new character poster for their upcoming Death Note adaptation, and this time we get a full look at Lakeith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton, Get Out) as L. Directed by Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest), Death Note will premiere globally on Netflix August 25.
Death Note is the story of Light Turner, a boy who discovers a notebook dropped to Earth by a Death God, who goes on a crusade to rid the world of evil, forcing him into a head-on collision against a brilliant but eccentric detective named L. Hit the jump for a full look at the poster.

Whatever this is, it’s not Death Note. Maybe some alternate reality thing? I’m not sure, but there is very little to latch onto as far as similarities. Ryuk is spotlighted pretty heavily, which looks wonderful, but the rest is beyond strange. Light tells a girl about his plan, and they form a cult called Kira together?
I’m trying to take all of this with a grain of salt, but man. It’s hard to not be judgmental here. Death Note is the story of Light Turner, a boy who discovers a notebook dropped to Earth by a Death God, who goes on a crusade to rid the world of evil, forcing him into a head-on collision against a brilliant but eccentric detective named L.
Netflix has released the first of what I assume will be a few more character posters for the upcoming live-action English adaptation of the famed manga, Death Note. The first poster shows Ryuk, the shinigami that drops his Death Note to keep himself occupied out of boredom.
Written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who finds a supernatural notebook, realizing if the owner writes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Becoming infatuated with his newfound godlike-status, he sets off on a murderous spree to rid the world of crime and tyranny. Netflix is directed by Adam Wingard, and hits August 25th. Hit the jump to check out the new poster in full.
