With production set to begin later this year, we now have our first bit of news on James Gunn’s upcoming soft reboot, The Suicide Squad, which will feature a new roster for the most part, with Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn, and Idris Elba replacing Will Smith as Deadshot. Collider dropped the news, and as expected for James Gunn, he’s made some pretty off-the-wall choices.
First up is Ratcatcher, who will be gender-swapped from the comics, as the studio is looking to cast a woman of any age or nationality. She is described as “an exterminator in Gotham City that turning to a life of crime, aided by an army of small rodents she can communicate with and control. She’s also a fan of poisonous gas.” She is also set to be mentored in the film by Deadshot.
Next is King Shark, a super-villain and humanoid who is believed to be the son of the Shark God. He was last seen in live-action on The Flash.
Then there’s the most insane choice: Polka-Dot Man. Another Batman villain, he’s described as being able to “grow multi-colored polka dots on his body that he can turn into fireballs and other weapons. For the most part, he’s embarrassed about his awkward abilities.”
Lastly, there’s Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith, an agent of peace whose motives are driven by an extremist form of pacifism that makes him so committed peace that he would kill for it. The report indicates that James Gunn is eyeing his friend Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) for this role.
It’s currently unknown if Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg will return, as well as Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller.
While it was initially reported that Will Smith’s Deadshot would be returning alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, it would seem the dates just couldn’t be worked out with Smith’s schedule, and he has opted not to return for The Suicide Squad, helmed by James Gunn. Interestingly, however, sources within the studio claim that the character could be replaced in the installment to keep the door open for Smith to return in a future film.
That honestly seems like the best idea, as Will Smith was arguably the heart of that entire film, with Margot Robbie being the star.
After previously dipping their toes into the superhero genre with Supergirl, which now resides at The CW, CBS is looking to get back in the game. Variety is reporting that CBS has commissioned a pilot for a Secret Six series, which currently has Rick Muirragui (Suits), Bill Lawrence (Scrubs), and Jeff Ingold (Whiskey Cavalier) attached as executive producers alongside Warner Bros. TV.
“Secret Six centers on six morally ambiguous strangers, each with their own unique specialties and secret pasts, who are brought together by an enigmatic figure who blackmails them into working as a team to expose the corruption of the corporate and political elite.”
Warner Bros. has announced that, after a long and grueling search for David Ayer’s replacement, a director for Suicide Squad 2 has been found. Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant, Warrior) has been tapped to write and direct the film, with its entire cast returning.
This is actually a pretty great choice. O’Connor is a safe director, with a good eye for action and emotion. His Suicide Squad will be much more well-rounded than its predecessor was, and should genuinely be an overall much better film. We’ll just have to see it all ends up.
So, in about 2 weeks, Injustice 2 finally hits store shelves and basically fulfills a wish I originally didn’t expect to see. The first Injustice title is an all-time favorite for me and my wife, and we had a ton of fun with friends and each other playing through this incredibly amazing game. Now, the sequel is being released and it looks even better than the first, with new characters, a new story, and now we even get character customization!
In preparation for the release of the game, Netherealms has been releasing a ton of roster information with character unveiling trailers and move-sets being released for the entire roster (that we know of). I have decided to take on the daunting task to collect all of them, outside of YouTube, so hit the jump and check out the entire roster for Injustice 2: Every Battle Defines You!
