Blade Runner 2049 is set to release in Japan on October 27th, and it’s now been announced than an anime prequel film is in the works, with legendary director Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy). Check out an english translation of the full press release, below:
Director Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) is directing an animated short tie-in to the Blade Runner 2049 film, which opens in Japan on October 27. The short is titled “Blade Runner Black Out 2022.”
The anime will take place in the year 2022, between the original Blade Runner film, which takes place in 2019, and its sequel Blade Runner 2049. The story will involve a large power outage on the west coast of the United States.
Watanabe is writing the script in addition to directing. Cygames Pictures, the anime studio subsidiary smartphone game publisher Cygames established last year, is producing the animation. Shukou Murase (Halo Legends, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing) is serving as character designer and animation director, and Flying Lotus is composing the music.
The cast includes Kenichirou Matsuda as Iggy, Ichigo Aoba as Trixie, and Makoto Furukawa as Ren.
Collider has posted the first of three new prequel films to the upcoming Blade Runner 2049. The first, titled 2036: Nexus Dawn introduces us to Jared Leto’s character, Niander Wallace, who claims to have designed a perfected model of replicant that he calls the Nexus 9. After the events of the first film, the Prohibition of Replicant technology begins. The prequel shows Wallace attempting to repeal that ban.

A new full trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 has been released online, with plenty of new footage here, as well as a few answers. We now know that Dave Bautista’s character is most certainly a Replicant, and we know that Ryan Gosling’s K is searching for Ford’d Rick Deckard, in an attempt to learn the truth about the creation of the Replicants.

The first full trailer for Blade Runner 2049 has also hit on a busy news day today. The trailer gives us a lot more to work with as far as plot goes, and we see glimpses of many of the new characters and the larger cast at hand. It’s an action-packed trailer that does a good job of reintroducing us to the cyberpunk world of Blade Runner.
