Birds of Prey To Be Rated-R

According to Deadline, while speaking at the US-China Entertainment Summit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles last night, Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan confirmed that the film is aiming for an R-rating. That was said to be one of Margot Robbie’s most adamant requests when pitching the film to Warner Bros.

Yan, the first female Asian director to ever helm a superhero film, went on to talk about landing the director’s chair, and her love of the script.

“I did my homework. I wouldn’t say it was easy, but it was relatively painless and straightforward. I immediately loved the script and it felt like something I could really do, and it felt very much like my own voice. I could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relateable.

So I went in with, not with confidence, but at least a sense that I belonged in the room, that somehow magically in terms of timing and luck that this opportunity was open to me and I was definitely going to make the best of it.”

Birds of Prey Lineup Confirmed

BOP

The Wrap has confirmed that an earlier rumor regarding the lineup of director Cathy Yan’s upcoming Birds of Prey movie was fairly spot-on. The team’s lineup will consist of Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, Renee Montoya, and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. It’s currently not known whether Montoya will be The Question in the film, or a detective.

The villain of the piece is expected to be Cassandra Cain’s father, David Cain, who is commonly associated with Ra’s Al Ghul, and Cassandra’s mother, Lady Shiva. This all but confirms that Batgirl is not involved as many expected.

Arrow’s New Black Canary

Arrow

When Arrow initially started, we thought we knew all the strange television changes that Greg Berlanti had made were going to stick. We knew who the characters would be, their destinies. After years of changes, and twists, things are taking shape in a most unexpected way, with the newly introduced Dinah Drake taking on the mantle of a badass meta-human Black Canary, who gets to suit up next season.

It felt that we wanted to save it for a special occasion, and the premiere seemed like a really good place to do it. She needs something tactical. She has this meta power, but she also has the bo staff, so we just felt it was right for her to have something that was definitely more than a nod to the DCU character, but also something that was distinctive from what we’ve seen before. This really fits the bill. Maya Mani, as usual, did an amazing job with it. My favorite part is actually the subtle hint of the gold and yellow lines in it.

Hit the jump for a full look at the incredible costume.
