After designing my beautiful girlfriends awesome blog, The Rad Hatter, I decided that I missed blogging, and was going to start back up again myself. This time, I’m going to try to be a little looser with it, and make it more of a personal thing, but I will still cover awesome news, that is just too awesome to pass up. Like trailers, and cool stuff for games, comics, and movies, and such.

Can’t wait!!

One of my favorite Japanese Anime of all time is without a doubt Psalms of Planets: Eureka Seven. So, naturally when I discovered that a movie was in production I became ridiculously ecstatic at this incredible prospect. “There could be complete and total closure. We could find out exactly what happened to everyone after the series,” I thought. Then I discovered the story.

I went into the one-time showing of Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers already having a general idea at how different the film was going to be from the series, but I can’t say I was expecting this much difference. That is to say, the difference didn’t diminish the film in the least, and I left thoroughly satisfied.

Hit the jump to view my thoughts on Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers.

The moment this film began, I knew I was in for something completely different from the original show. But I also immediately knew I was going to be satisfied with what I saw, and I was correct.

Pretty much every main character in the original series returns for the film, but their back stories and general character is very different for most of the characters. Renton is much more determined in this film, and is ready at every turn to do what he needs to do. Not to mention he is very Shinji-like in how insane he becomes at certain parts of the film. Eureka is also very different as she shows much more emotion in this film than we’re used to. Especially between Renton, as they’re childhood friends in the film, rather than it being love at first sight. Holland is also very different as his character is actually a 17-year old boy aging at a rapid pace, willing to do whatever it takes to save him and the crew of the Gekko State, who are also enduring the same “curse”, as it were. Another massively different character is Anemone, whose incredible departure from lunatic, to wise spiritual guide is shocking yet a wonder to see.

The animation for the film is absolutely gorgeous at times, but tended to suffer at others. Primarily suffering at a point where the lithograph outline of Nirvash, who is now a adorable living creature could be seen. But the film shines during the in-air scenes as Nirvash TypeZERO, and the Devilfish both soar beautifully through the air, rivaling some of the most incredible anime films created.

The story, while vastly different from the original series, is absolutely brilliant. Essentially, the universe where Young Lovers takes place is an alternate universe to that seen in the series, and the goal of most of the main characters is to reach the universe of the original show which they have dubbed “Neverland”. They’re attempting to reach Neverland in the hopes that it is a universe where time stands still and they can be free of the curse that was put on them by the late Colonel Dewey (yeah). All the while, Renton is attempting to protect the woman he has loved most of his life, Eureka, who also happens to be a spy for the Eizo, the film counterparts of the Correllians from the original series. All of the characters seem to have their own agenda for many intents and purposes, but they’re all eventually connected at the end.

If you’re a fan of the original Eureka Seven series, I highly recommend watching this movie simply to see how vastly different it is from the original. Not to mention how absolutely incredible it is. This is highly recommended for those actually able to watch it, as I attended a one-time showing of the film in theaters. Overall, this film was absolutely brilliant and I recommend all to watch it. The differences from the original series make it an easy film to pick up on even if you haven’t seen the original series. No doubt in my mind, fans of anime and good movies alike will enjoy this gorgeous film.
